Freeway Park, designed by Lawrence Halprin & Associates and opened in 1976, has officially been designated a Seattle city landmark. At its most recent meeting on May 18, 2022, the Landmarks Preservation Board voted unanimaously for its approval, completing four-step designation process required by the city.
This local recognition follows its listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. In 2017, the site was considered potentially threatened by plans that would have altered the park's original landscape design. The Cultural Landscape Foundation included it in Landslide program and ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï and and ºÚÁϳԹÏ/WEWA chapter supported advocacy efforts.
Now, as designated local landmark, Freeway Park will be protected by city ordinance.
